Arc'teryx Cerium LT Hoody Review: The Best Down Jacket for the Money?

The Cerium LT is Arc'teryx's most popular down jacket — and for good reason. It strikes that sweet spot between warmth, weight, and packability that few down jackets can match.

But at $379 full price, it's definitely an investment. Is it actually worth it? And can you find a better deal in the outlet?

After wearing the Cerium LT through two winters of hiking, skiing, and travel, here's my honest take.

Quick Stats

Spec Details
Weight ~305g (10.8 oz) Men's M
Fill 850 fill power European goose down
Fit Trim / athletic
Pockets 2 hand pockets, 1 internal pocket
Best Use Cold weather layering, belay jacket
MSRP $379

✨

Bottom line: The Cerium LT is the best down jacket for the money if you want premium warmth without the weight. It packs down tiny, feels luxurious, and is warm enough for most winter conditions when properly layered.

First Impressions

Right out of the bag, the Cerium LT feels... well, really light. At 285g (10.1 oz) for a men's medium, it's impressive how much warmth they've packed into such a light jacket.

The outer fabric (Arato 10) has a nice, soft feel — not crinkly or noisy like some ultralight down jackets. The stitching is clean, the baffles are evenly filled, and everything just feels premium.

And it packs down small. Like, really small. It stuffs into its own pocket and becomes roughly the size of a Nalgene bottle.

Warmth-to-Weight Ratio: The Star of the Show

This is what you're paying for. The Cerium LT uses 850-fill-power European goose down — some of the highest quality down you can buy.

What that means in practice:

  • •More warmth for less weight
  • •Better compressibility
  • •Longer lifespan (high-fill down maintains loft better over time)

Temperature range (for me):

  • •Active: comfortable down to about 25°F (-4°C)
  • •Standing around: comfortable down to about 35°F (2°C)
  • •Under a shell: add another 5-10 degrees of warmth

Everyone runs different temperatures, but for most people, the Cerium LT works great as a midlayer under a shell in winter, or as a standalone jacket in cool (40-50°F) conditions.

Fit & Sizing

I'm 5'10", 165 lbs, and a Medium fits me perfectly.

The fit is what Arc'teryx calls "regular" — not too slim, not too baggy. It's trim enough to layer under a shell comfortably, but roomy enough for a base layer and a light midlayer underneath.

Fit notes:

  • •Sleeve length is good — covers wrists, doesn't bunch when reaching
  • •Torso length is just right — sits at the belt line, not too short, not too long
  • •Hood fits well — snug but not tight, works with or without a hat
  • •No excess bulk — it doesn't look puffy or baggy

If you plan on wearing thick layers underneath or prefer a roomier fit, size up. Otherwise, go with your normal size.

Construction & Durability

For an ultralight down jacket, the Cerium LT is surprisingly tough.

Construction highlights:

  • •10D Arato face fabric — light but durable, with a DWR coating
  • •Down Composite Mapping — strategically placed synthetic insulation in areas that get wet (shoulders, cuffs, hem)
  • •Stitch-through baffles — keeps the down from shifting
  • •YKK zippers — smooth and reliable

I've had mine for over 2 years now, and it's still in great shape. The face fabric has a few minor snags (totally normal for 10D fabric), but the down is still fully lofted, the zippers still work perfectly, and no feathers are leaking out.

Features

The Cerium LT doesn't have a ton of features, but the ones it has are well-executed.

Pockets:

  • •2 hand pockets (zippered, mesh lining — great for venting)
  • •1 chest pocket (zippered, doubles as the stuff sack pocket)
  • •1 internal pocket (great for gloves or a beanie)

Other features:

  • •Full front zipper with a wind flap behind it
  • •Elastic cuffs — comfortable, keep wind out
  • •Adjustable hem drawcord — cinch it down for windy days
  • •Hood with elastic binding — fits snugly, no drawcords to fiddle with
  • •Stuff sack — built into the chest pocket

Everything is simple, light, and functional. No unnecessary features adding weight.

What Could Be Better

No jacket is perfect. Here's what I'd change:

  1. 1Not for extreme cold. If you need something for below-zero temperatures standing around, you'll want something warmer (like the Thorium AR or a parka).
  1. 2Delicate face fabric. The 10D Arato fabric is light but not super tough. If you're bushwhacking or doing anything where you'll be rubbing against rocks, you'll want a shell over it or a burlier jacket.
  1. 3Price. $379 full price is expensive. But here's the good news: the Cerium LT regularly hits the outlet at 30-40% off, bringing it down to $227-265. At that price, it's competitive with much lower-tier down jackets.

Who Should Buy It

The Cerium LT is perfect if you:

  • •Want a lightweight, packable down jacket for hiking and travel
  • •Value warmth-to-weight ratio over maximum warmth
  • •Need something that layers well under a shell
  • •Want a clean, versatile design
  • •Like high-quality materials and construction

Skip it if you:

  • •Need maximum warmth for extreme cold (get the Thorium AR or a parka)
  • •Do a lot of bushwhacking or rough use (get a synthetic jacket)
  • •Are on a very tight budget (there are cheaper down options)
  • •Sweat a lot and need maximum breathability (try the Atom LT instead)

Outlet Buying Tips

The Cerium LT is one of the most common Arc'teryx items in the outlet. Which means there are usually plenty of sizes and colors available — if you're patient.

My strategy:

  1. 1Set a price alert on OutletSnap for 35%+ off
  2. 2Black and dark colors go fast — consider lighter colors if you want a better deal
  3. 3Sizes M and L sell out fastest at 40% off
  4. 4End of season (February-March and August-September) is when you'll see the best discounts

Final Verdict

The Cerium LT isn't the warmest down jacket, the lightest down jacket, or the cheapest down jacket. But it might be the best balanced down jacket you can buy.

It's warm enough for most winter activities, light enough to carry in your pack just in case, and packable enough to travel with. The quality is excellent, the fit is great, and it just works.

At full price, it's an investment. At 30-40% off in the outlet? It's one of the best values in premium down gear.

Highly recommended.
