Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody Review: The Ultimate Fleece Alternative?

The Gamma MX is one of Arc'teryx's most unique jackets. It's not quite a fleece, not quite a softshell — it's somewhere in between, and that's exactly why people love it.

If you're tired of fleece that pills, gets everywhere, and doesn't block wind, the Gamma MX might be exactly what you're looking for.

After a full winter of wearing the Gamma MX hiking, climbing, and just everyday use, here's my honest review.

What Is the Gamma MX, Exactly?

Let's start with the basics. The Gamma MX is a "softshell fleece" — it uses Fortius 2.0 fabric, which is a stretchy, brushed fleece-backed softshell.

Think of it like this:

  • •Outside: Wind-resistant, durable softshell face
  • •Inside: Brushed fleece backing for warmth and comfort
  • •Stretchy: Full 4-way stretch for movement

It gives you the warmth and comfort of a fleece with the wind resistance and durability of a softshell. Pretty clever.

First Impressions

Right out of the box, the Gamma MX feels substantial. It's heavier than a regular fleece (520g / 18.3 oz for a men's medium) but lighter than a full softshell.

The fabric has a nice matte finish on the outside, and the inside is soft and cozy. The construction is clean — typical Arc'teryx quality, with precise stitching and well-finished seams.

It also has that classic Arc'teryx look: clean lines, understated logo, just a really well-designed jacket.

Fit & Sizing

I'm 5'10", 165 lbs, and a Medium fits me great.

The fit is what Arc'teryx calls "regular" — not too slim, not too baggy. It's roomy enough for a base layer underneath, but trim enough that it doesn't look or feel bulky.

Fit notes:

  • •Sleeves are perfect length — covers wrists, great range of motion
  • •Torso length is just right — covers your waist, doesn't ride up when reaching
  • •Hood fits well — roomy enough for a helmet, snug enough without one
  • •Articulated sleeves — great for climbing and reaching overhead

If you plan on layering it under a shell (which it's designed for), go with your normal size. If you want to wear thick midlayers underneath or prefer a roomier fit, size up.

Performance: Where It Shines

Warmth

The Gamma MX is warmer than most fleeces, but not quite as warm as a heavy fleece or a light puffy.

Temperature range (for me):

  • •Active (hiking/climbing): comfortable from 30-50°F (-1 to 10°C)
  • •Standing around: comfortable from 40-55°F (4 to 13°C)
  • •Under a shell: adds another 10-15°F of warmth

The wind resistance helps a lot here. Regular fleece lets wind cut right through it. The Gamma MX blocks most wind, which makes it feel significantly warmer in real-world use.

Breathability

Here's the thing about the Gamma MX — it breathes way better than I expected.

I was worried that a wind-resistant fleece would be clammy and sweaty. But nope — the Fortius 2.0 fabric breathes surprisingly well. On brisk hikes, I stayed comfortable and dry, even when working hard.

It's not as breathable as a lightweight fleece, but it's way more breathable than a softshell. Good balance.

Wind Resistance

This is the Gamma MX's superpower. Unlike regular fleece, which lets wind pass right through, the Gamma MX blocks almost all wind.

On windy ridges, regular fleece feels like wearing a sweater — the wind cuts right through. The Gamma MX? You barely feel the wind. That alone makes it worth considering if you hike in windy areas.

Durability

After a full winter of heavy use, my Gamma MX still looks almost new.

  • •No pilling — this is the best part. Regular fleece pills like crazy. The Gamma MX? Not a single pill.
  • •No snags — the face fabric is tough enough that it doesn't catch on everything
  • •Zippers still work perfectly
  • •Cuffs and hem show minimal wear

For reference, I've had regular fleeces that looked beat up after 3 months. The Gamma MX looks like I've barely worn it. That's a big difference.

Features

The Gamma MX has a nice set of features — not too many, not too few.

Pockets:

  • •2 hand pockets (zippered, great for keeping hands warm)
  • •1 chest pocket (zippered, perfect for a phone)
  • •2 internal pockets (mesh, great for gloves or a hat)

Other features:

  • •Full front zipper with a storm flap
  • •Adjustable cuffs — velcro, easy to use with gloves
  • •Adjustable hem drawcord — cinch it down for windy days
  • •Helmet-compatible hood — with one-hand adjustment
  • •Pit zips — for extra ventilation when you're working hard

Everything works well and feels durable. The pit zips are a nice touch — not all fleeces have those, and they come in handy more than you'd think.

What Could Be Better

  1. 1It's not the lightest. At 520g, it's heavier than most fleeces. If you're counting grams, you might want something lighter.
  1. 2Not waterproof. This should be obvious — it's a fleece/softshell hybrid, not a rain jacket. It'll handle light drizzle, but not steady rain.
  1. 3Price. $299 full price is a lot for what's essentially a fleece. But here's the good news: the Gamma MX does show up in the outlet, sometimes at 30-40% off. At $180-210, it's much more justifiable.

Who Should Buy It

The Gamma MX is perfect if you:

  • •Hate fleece that pills and looks beat up after a few months
  • •Hike or climb in windy conditions
  • •Want one jacket that works as a midlayer and a standalone
  • •Value durability and longevity
  • •Like the softshell/fleece hybrid concept

Skip it if you:

  • •Want the lightest possible midlayer (get a down jacket)
  • •Need maximum breathability for high-output activities
  • •Are on a tight budget (there are cheaper fleeces)
  • •Only need something for casual wear

Outlet Buying Tips

The Gamma MX isn't quite as common in the outlet as the Atom LT or Cerium LT, but it does show up — especially in past-season colors.

My strategy:

  1. 1Set a price alert on OutletSnap for 30%+ off
  2. 2Be patient — it might take a few weeks for your size/color to drop
  3. 3End of season is when you'll see the best selection
  4. 4If you see your size at 30% off and you like the color, grab it — it might not go lower

Final Verdict

The Gamma MX isn't for everyone. It's heavier than a fleece, not as warm as a puffy, and more expensive than both.

But here's the thing: it does things that neither fleece nor puffy can do. It blocks wind like a softshell, breathes like a heavy fleece, and lasts way longer than both.

If you're tired of buying a new fleece every year because they pill and wear out — get the Gamma MX. It'll last you 5+ years and look good the whole time.

At full price, it's a splurge. At outlet prices? It's a no-brainer.

Highly recommended.
